Outstanding Business Professors at WVU, Part 3

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

By Jonathan Bentz Students appreciate teachers that can show them how the material they teach can be applied to the real world. Dr. Richard Riley, an accounting professor at West Virginia Universitys College of Business and Economics, goes beyond relating his material to the real world for his students. He puts them in it. Graduate students that enroll in Rileys Accounting and Business Consultation course run a complex simulated business, compete with their classmates, sell a portion of the company to venture capital investors and prepare and deliver a performance report to those same VC investors. There is a certain element of pride involved in that program, Riley said. The fact students are in competition with their classmates and have to deal with real world people give them extra incentive to embrace the activity. My background is well suited towards students maximizing their potential once they graduate, Riley said. He entered the academic world in 1998 after nine years of professional experience as a CPA and CFO. I try to make a very strong connection between what I am doing in the classroom and what they will be doing when they graduate in the real world. He also incorporates simulated real world-like activities in his fraud and forensic classes. Riley became motivated to teach after realizing that students often graduate with plenty of knowledge, but little experience in putting that knowledge to work in the classroom. I always focus on students getting hands-on experiences in my classes, Riley said. The more I can get students assignments to emulate what theyll be doing in the real world, the better off they will be for themselves and their employer. Because of his blackboard-to-boardroom approach to teaching, Riley was awarded Outstanding Faculty Member by Beta Alpha Psi in 2000 and in the fall of 2005, he will be awarded Outstanding Teacher of the Year by the College of B&E. Students are going through many life experiences as undergrads or grad students, Riley said. With so many things going on besides my class, I need to make sure they are prepared when they go to the real world. Students will understand everything I have taught them once they get out there, but providing for that connection is my most important job. Depression

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

By Michele Michaels We now know that there are cures for many of the diseases that are considered to be non-curable. If you go to Europe or Asia you will find many of these diseases being cured. We in the US are so pre-occupied with profit that we prefer treatment to cure. It brings in more money on a consistent basis. But, in spite of all that there are those that dare to challenge the establishment and offer to those who need it the cure for so many diseases. Below is from Dr. Hulda Clarks book The Cure For All Diseases. More information on Dr. Clark, the zapper and her books can be found at: www.drclarkuniversity.org or www.drhuldaclark.org Depression All persons I have seen with clinical depression had small roundworms in the brain. Is it any wonder that the brain can’t make enough neurotransmitters or gets them out of balance? The usual worms are hookworms (Anclystoma), Ascaris of cats and dogs, Trichinellas and Strongyloides. Although it is commonly believed that hookworms penetrate the skin when walking barefoot on earth, this appears to be a negligible route. The important routes are eating animal filth and inhaling filthy dust. Our pets pick these worms up daily. We get them and give them in constant exchange with our pets and family members. Diapering babies is an especially hazardous, though necessary, business. Letting little children clean up after their own bowel movements is even more hazardous. Hands should be sanitized with grain alcohol after dealing with bowel contents, whether your own, your child’s or an animal’s. If you clean up a messy diaper and then your hands well with soap, then go to make the chopped salad for dinner, you’re sure to give each family member a dose of whatever the baby has. It was hiding under your fingernails. Animals clean up the easy way: they simply lick the youngster’s bottom. But, we humans are not strong enough to take on a dose of bottom with each meal. We must sanitize our hands. Cleaning bathrooms is also dangerous. Wear gloves. If nobody suffers from depression, you can use bleach (stored in the garage) to disinfect the stool, otherwise use alcohol (50% grain alcohol). Keep doorknobs and faucet handles wiped with alcohol, too. If you suffer from depression use your zapper to immediately kill these four roundworm species: Ancylostoma, Ascaris, Trichinella and Strongyloides. Other family members should be cleared of these four worms on the same day or as close to it as possible. Re-infection always occurs. In the depressed person, the microscopic parasites travel immediately to the brain. In others, they may simply reside in the intestine or lungs or liver, or other organs. Pathways (routes) to the brain have become established for the depressed person. These must heal before there is any tolerance for re-infection. Solvents and other toxins, also in the brain, slow down or prevent healing. For this reason the depressed person should do the Four Clean-ups. The bacteria of the Shigella family are always seen in depression cases. Kill all Shigellas and avoid re-infection by boiling dairy products and not eating those that can’t be boiled. Go on the Bowel Program. Do not eat deli food or hand prepared salads at salad bars. Finally, do the Liver Cleanse, repeating every two weeks. Depression, even of long standing, can lift within days after the brain finally has its territory to itself. Look in the mirror and smile at yourself for your success in vanquishing your invaders. Never again, let these creepy crawlers into the happiness-center of your brain. From the book “The Cure for all Diseases” Page 256. Bike Accidents - How To You Claim Compensation

Monday, October 29th, 2007

By Martin Nolan It is said that the number of cyclists on our roads in the UK has doubled since the year 2000. There are around 4 million people cycling regularly either for recreation, fitness or simply to get to and from work. In London recent studies have suggested that by 2010 the numbers of cyclists in the capital will be 80% above the current level. The congestion charge, road layout improvements and safety features have all helped to increase the volumes of people willing to switch from petrol power to pedal power. With such an increase in volume, there is inevitably an increase in the numbers of cycle related accidents and injuries. If you have been injured on the road whilst riding a pedal bike then you may wish to know how you can pursue a claim. Most accident lawyers will be able to deal with your case ideally you should instruct a firm that specialise in pedal cycle compensation. Most cyclists do not have the benefit of legal expenses insurance (which most car drivers tend to have as part of their motor cover) and so instead they may be forced to simply make enquiries on the internet or use a local solicitors practice to help them with a claim. Most cycle related claims are simple and therefore you do not necessarily need representation from a specialist solicitor. However if you want to ensure that you receive adequate compensation then specialists are the best people to hire. There are certain claims (which we cover in a separate article) that you may be entitled to make that are cycle specific yet most non- specialists wont be aware of. You may miss out on vital damages simply because your solicitor isnt aware of the full entitlement that you have as an injured cyclist. Here are a few tips which should help you make a successful claim: 1. If you are injured seek medical advice from preferably the local hospital or at the very least your GP 2. Try to ensure the Police receive a report of the incident. This could come in handy despite the fact that (unless there is serious injury) they may not be too interested in your situation.. 3. Obtain an estimate for any bike damage 4. If the bike is not repairable please provide copies of the original purchase receipt and / or an estimate of the actual replacement costs. 5. Call a specialist bike accident solicitor. For more on bike accident claims please call The Claims Connection helpline on 0800 0322210. Deal with the specialists right from the word go. Dont take any risks with your claim. Resolutions or Results?

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

By Michelle May, M.D. On January 1st, millions of people will resolve to lose weight. Do not be one of them. You may be thinking, “What?!!! Don not resolve to lose weight? But it’s a tradition; I do it every year!” But losing weight is not a resolution, it is a RESULT. It is the result of making specific changes in the way you eat, move, and live. So this year, instead of setting a goal to lose an arbitrary number of pounds, inches, or clothing sizes, resolve to think differently about eating, physical activity, and living. Let me give you an example. Leah said she just HAD to lose weight because she did not like the way she looked or felt. She admitted that she had tried many times in the past to lose weight but she always reverted back to her old habits as soon as her resolve wore thin. She was a busy mom with two kids and a successful career. She typically skipped breakfast or grabbed a donut at work. She was starving by lunch time so she would pick up fast food to eat at her desk while doing paperwork. Dinner was either fast food again between her kids’ soccer practice and dance classes or a quick-to-fix meal like mac ‘n cheese before homework. After the kids were in bed and the house was finally picked up, she would snack until she went to bed. It would have been easy to focus on what she should or should not be eating but we both knew that her weight was really just a result of the choices she made at the many decision points throughout her busy days. Once she really understood what was really going on, she focused on what was most meaningful to her: spending time with her family and having the energy to be successful at her job. With this focus, we laid out a plan to make one change at a time. First, she started getting up 10 minutes earlier for a bowl of cereal and some quiet time before anyone else was up. She quickly found that she felt calmer and had more energy throughout the morning. Her next step was to start bringing her lunch at least several times a week and give herself at least 20 minutes to eat without working. She enjoyed her meals more and felt more recharged by taking a break. With these positive experiences to fuel her along, she took her next step: walking for 10 minutes twice during her work day. She was not perfect but it felt great so she did the best she could to be consistent. Next, she asked her husband to help their family plan ahead for dinner by throwing beans or chicken into the crock pot or having the ingredients on hand for a main dish salad. On the occasions they still went out for fast food, she tried to make healthier choices and stopped up-sizing her meal. Not only were they spending less money, but the kids were eating healthier too. She then turned to her night time snack habit. She realized that most of the time she was not hungry but was rewarding herself for getting through the day. She promised herself that she could eat her favorite foods without feeling guilty but she wanted to try rewarding herself in more nurturing ways. Her favorites became hot baths, reading, and scrap booking. She was feeling so much better that started a dance class while her daughter was in ballet twice a week. Looking back, Leah realized that if she had just started another diet or joined a gym like every other year, she might have had some quick but temporary results. This time she knew that weight loss was only one of many great results she got from the small changes she made. This year when you sit down with pen and paper to write your goals for 2007, focus on the small stuff instead of monster goals. By making one sustainable change at a time, you can get the results you want from your resolutions too. Michelle May, M.D. is a recovered yoyo dieter and the award-winning author of Am I Hungry? The Magic of Coin Collecting

Saturday, October 27th, 2007

By Stephen Morgan Coins, paper money, stocks and bonds are more sought after from the historical point of view rather than any other such as aesthetics. That having been said, there is always a chance that every now and then, something extremely rare will pop up and cause a ripple of excitement to sweep through the Collectables and Memorabilia Community. If we sum up, the collection of Coins is known as Numismatics and now includes as sub areas of their own, Notaphily the collection of paper money and Scripophily the collection of stock and bond certificates. Depending on their view point, some collectors like to specialise in type collecting i.e. a coin from each series and design minted from separate places and times. For example within the history of Great Britain you could have collectors specialising in English Victorian or Edwardian Coins. Other Collectors could specialise with purely historical items from say ancient times and are more geared to museum type exhibits and others could specialise within the area of errors and mistakes printing wise. With coins, the condition of the item is vital. If, as a collector you can manage to procure some coins in mint condition and uncirculated and keep them this way then so much the better. Kept well coins improve with age and a good even tone will increase the value considerably so whatever you do, do not clean or polish them. Quite often there is quite a market in commemorative issues and these are often produced in large quantities so it is imperative that if you wish to retain their value, these items whether they be notes or coins, are kept in what is called Mint Condition. Ideally if you can manage to obtain the notes or coins in a special presentation case and keep them in it then so much the better. So to sum up a few tips on collecting Coins and Notes. Firstly choose pieces that you find attractive, interesting and informative. If you dont then sooner or later the interest factor will wane and you will end up losing value on uncared for items etc. Invest wisely in the storing and display side of albums and mounts etc. Certificates, Coins and Notes have to be kept in the best conditions possible. With regards to coins, handle them as few times as you can. When you do make sure that protective gloves made from soft fabric are worn and if you bought the items from a dealer in protective casings then make sure that the items are kept in these cases. Notes and Certificates must be kept flat and display as little wear and tear as possible. Start Catching More Trout Today

Friday, October 26th, 2007

By Trevor Kugler Do you want to start catching more trout today? If you want to catch more trout, the easiest way to do that is to begin to learn more and more about how trout behave. Just like every living creature on this planet, there are some things trout prefer and some things they don’t. I’m going to do my best to enlighten you about a few of the things trout prefer, so as to help you catch more as soon as possible. Clear Running Water - Trout prefer cool, clear running water. You will always have more success when the water is either clear or off color just a bit. High, muddy water is the hardest time to catch trout. The tint of the water matters in lakes as well. The less stained the water is the more success you’ll have. Cloudy Skies - I’ve always caught more trout when the sky is cloudy. Cloudy skies have always out fished “blue bird” skies. Natural Presentation - Trout, whether they be rainbow, brook, cutthroat, or brown always seem to prefer that the bait look as natural as possible. Fly fishermen have always known this. That’s why their fly’s so closely resemble a real bug. Making your bait, whether it be a worm, minnow, hellgrammite, leech, or cricket, presenting in the most natural way possible is paramount to success. Gang hooks are a great way to accomplish this, for you bait fishermen. You want your bait to look like it doesn’t have any hooks in it. If A Technique Isn’t Working, Change It - The best way to tell you about this trout catching tip is to give you an example. For Example if you’ve been throwing a 1/8 ounce black rooster tail around for an hour without a bite, you need to change it. Try a white one, or a little bigger size. Trout can be incredibly finicky at time and on occasion will only bite a certain color and size. I’ve had exactly this happen. I had been fishing for three hours without as much as a bite. I changed to a 1/8 ounce brown rooster tail and almost immediately caught 3 nice rainbow trout. My normal rule of thumb is if something doesn’t work within a forty five minute window of time, it’s time to change it up a bit. Use The Weather And Moon To Your Advantage - This costs you nothing but a little time and can pay huge dividends. A little research into how the weather and moon affect fish can be the single biggest factor to you catching more trout today. It truly is amazing how much more active fish are under certain conditions. Begin using these pointers, and you will start catching more trout today; it’s as simple as that. Catching trout consistently can be challenging, but with time and practice you’ll become a better and better angler. When I refer to catching trout and catching trout consistently, I want everyone to realize that I’m not talking about small fish (twelve inches and under). Anyone can catch small trout consistently. I’m referring to the nice trout, twelve inches and bigger, with a particular interest in those trout that run eighteen inches and bigger. Those are the big fish that I am referring to and personally spend my time fishing for. How To Have Fun At Your Wedding

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

By Lesley-Ann Graham Weddings are a wonderful time. For you, the bride and groom, it is a time to celebrate love and finding the person with whom you will live happily ever after. For your family, this may be a chance to renew ties and have a reunion. For your friends, it’s a chance to party! It is an exciting and happy time for everyone. The reception is meant to be a time to let the joy sill over so why not plan some activities and entertainment to make it even more fun. For example, in some countries, the single ladies avoid catching the bouquet so the bride doesn’t do the bouquet toss. The ladies are all gathered and asked to form a ring and a bunch of flowers, usually roses, are passed around in time to music. When the song is stopped, the ladies are asked to check if their flower is the one with a special tag or marking. That lady is given the bouquet. For couples who love to dance, why not have a really good big band play. It’s wonderful to have musicians who can croon you the sweetest love songs and who can also get everyone’s feet tapping to the beat. Your wedding planner is sure to have a list of performers who can get your guests in the mood. You may also have some family traditions that can keep the celebration swinging. Bring out those dances that can be easily taught and will be a new experience for some of the guests. Reels and line dances are fun to watch and even more enjoyable to do. Get everyone into the groove! Lesley-Ann Graham runs WeddingTrix.com - a valuable wedding planning resource with articles, tips and advice to help you plan your perfect wedding. Personal Loans for Unemployed - Liberating You from the Tangles of Unemployment

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Andrew_Baker]Andrew Baker Like most of the contingencies (the after effects of unemployment safely allow it to be categorised into a contingency), one is rarely prepared enough to face the inconveniences being forced upon by unemployment. And within months of losing job, making ends meet becomes tougher for the individual. The situation gets grimmer if the jobless individual is left to fend for himself. The unemployment dole handled out by the government is hardly sufficient to meet the routine needs. As soon as the larger expenses crop up, the finances fall flat. There is little option other than to surrender to the forces of poverty and indebtedness. You certainly do not intend to allow the chain of events a free run in your life and finances. [http://www.loansfiesta.co.uk/loans_for_unemployed.html style=text-decoration: none]Personal loans for unemployed will be a very important weapon in this venture. Personal loans for unemployed identify well with the concerns of the jobless borrowers and thus prove a more potent technique to fight the times of unemployment. A question that crops in most minds is why the unemployed individuals need a specialised loan, and why they cannot realize their purpose through a regular loan. The attitude of the loan providers is more to blame for this. Since, the unemployed people lose a stable source of income, they are not able to instil much faith in the loan providers that they will safely repay the personal loan for unemployed. Loan providers perceive a greater degree of risk in offering personal loans for unemployed. This leaves loan providers with two options- either reject the application of the unemployed altogether, or offer them personal loans for unemployed with renewed terms and conditions. Being refused personal loans because of unemployment leaves borrowers with no choice except to look after other loan providers. It is not that difficult to search for personal loan for unemployed now. With the loan providers making a widespread use of technology, borrowers can find listings by loan providers offering quotes on personal loans for unemployed. With an increasing number of lenders in the UK borrowers do have a chance to qualify for personal loans with some or other lender. The lenders who agree to offer financial assistance may generally offer personal loans on terms that differ from the regular loans. The principal difference may be noticed in the rate of interest charged. Because of putting a greater exposure on the loan providers, expecting an interest rate equivalent to the regular loans will be unreasonable. Rate of interest is a function of the degree of risk involved in a loan. Standard variable rate of interest charged on personal loans for unemployed is generally higher. This however, doesnt give the loan provider a free hand in charging interest. There have been many instances of unemployed borrowers losing their homes or other possessions because of agreeing to excessively high interest rates. The base rate to be charged on personal loans for unemployed can be ascertained through a loan calculator. A loan calculator lists loans of all kinds along with their respective interest rates. A borrower can upon comparison know what the lowest interest rate is, and also know whether the interest rate he is being offered is in concurrence with the best available rates of interest. The entries in the loan calculator may not have been updated according to changes in the rate of interest and other terms. Thus, though the loan calculator may not give an exact information, it may be used for defining a benchmark. Personal loans for unemployed are generally secured on the borrowers home. The collateral helps salvage a somewhat better deal for the borrowers. Willingness to offer ones home as collateral also makes more and more lenders keen upon offering personal loans to the unemployed. The personal loan thus offered is also termed as a home equity loan. A borrower has the option to receive the money due on the home equity loan through two different methods. He either receives the entire amount at one instance or opens a home equity line of credit to assist him in emergencies. The second option of home equity line of credit will be much more useful for people who do not have an immediate use of the entire sum. Under the home equity line of credit, interest is charged only on the amount withdrawn and not the entire amount as in the home equity loan. Though personal loans for unemployed may not cater to unemployment in its entirety, but it can offer a potent short-term solution to the financial shortage that unemployment is generally accompanied with. Ease Aches and Pains While You sleep by Switching to a Memory Foam Pillow and Mattress Pad

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

By Chris Rodriguez The memory foam pillow is quickly becoming the number one choice amongst pillow buyers today. Synthetic and down pillows are still a good choice depending on who will be using them, but the memory foam contains unique properties that no other pillows can match. Memory foam pillows are ideal for those who may have head or neck pain, as the characteristics of the foam will allow for the relief of painful pressure points. Memory foam has made its way into the forefront ever since it was discovered that the foam molds to the shape of your body using your body’s own heat. The memory foam remains firm when not in use, but when you lay your head upon the pillow, the memory foam gently caresses your head and neck as it warms up. This provides an ideal sleeping surface and the proper support needed for your head, neck, and shoulders. With a memory foam cervical pillow, your head and neck remain aligned with your spine as you sleep. The pressures you often feel will be reduced when using the memory foam, which means less tossing and turning for you. It has also been discovered that when your breathing passage is properly aligned by using your memory foam bed pillow, snoring problems are reduced. You may want to get yourself a memory foam mattress topper as well. This will provide your spine with the support it needs to stay in proper alignment with the rest of your body. The combination of the foam pillow and the foam mattress topper may have you never wanting to get out of bed either! Another wonderful thing about memory foam cervical pillows is that they are naturally hypo-allergenic. This is great news for the many allergy sufferers out there! If your sleep is being disrupted because of a flat pillow, a hard pillow, or too fluffy a pillow, maybe it’s time you tried a memory foam cervical bed pillow. They are only approximately $50.00 and can provide you with a good nights sleep every night. Take a look online for your memory foam cervical pillow as the prices are probably better than what you would find in a store. Keep in mind, however, that the benefits of sleeping on memory foam will far outweigh whatever price that you will pay for it!! MEMORY FOAM MATTRESS PAD: A memory foam mattress pad is an inexpensive way to improve the sleeping surface of your bed. Memory foam is designed so that it adjusts to your body’s temperature and weight giving you the support needed for a restful nights sleep. Many people are now buying memory foam mattress pads to take advantage of the many health benefits they have to offer, and the price is right, as you don’t have to go out and buy an entire new mattress set to reap those benefits. Visco-elastic memory foam was discovered in the 1960’s by NASA using their latest space age technology. The memory foam was first used as a cushion for astronauts at take-off and re-entry into the earth’s atmosphere. It was so successful that it started to be used to make critically ill individuals more comfortable. The memory foam visco-elastic mattress pad is able to provide you with an extra couple of inches of luxurious and beneficial comfort, which is great if you have a really hard mattress with no give or are experiencing back problems. There is no need to go out and spend hundreds of dollars for a more comfortable mattress set, when all you need is a foam mattress pad. Memory foam pads don’t cost very much when compared to the cost of an actual mattress set, but with the comfort they provide, you’ll feel like you’re sleeping on a cloud. A memory foam pad is unlike any other mattress pad in that many health benefits come with it. The moment you lay down on your memory foam mattress topper, your body temperature will heat up the memory foam cells causing the foam to distribute your body’s weight evenly over the entire mattress pad. This in turn will relieve any uncomfortable pressure points while allowing your spine to remain in an orthopedically correct position. Some people have even said they feel like they are floating on air. If you are having trouble sleeping at night, then maybe a memory foam pad for your mattress is exactly what you need. Take a look online for some great deals as they are usually less expensive than what you will find in a store. What is Righteousness? - Part 2

Sunday, October 21st, 2007

By Saundra L. Washington As was pointed out in part 1, righteous is not simple goodness. We know this because the Pharisee was a good man and followed religious rules and rituals more than most of us would or should. But, his goodness was unacceptable to God. There will be a lot of so called good people in hell. Goodness is not a ticket to the Kingdom of God. Righteousness is also not being different for difference sake. Though Christians are called upon to be different from unbelievers, God is concerned with what manner we are different and what constitutes the difference. Righteousness is not ritual. There are many who confuse following rules and rituals with righteousness. Ritual, be it ever so wonderful and beautiful, is not righteousness. In the church for example, it is possible to have ritual without worship or what St. Paul called the form of godliness. The form is as far as a lot of people go. There is absolutely nothing real about them. They look like saints but act like Satan. Righteousness is definitely not ritual. It is not a body of rules to be rehearsed like an actor would rehearse a scene. We can never measure up by following rules and rituals. The Pharisee believed in sticking to the rules. Listen to him as he proudly says, I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’ Luke 9:12. Now I believe in fasting when there is real spiritual reason for it. But this business of not eating simply to impress someone with it is ridiculous. I am amazed how during the Lenten season the things people decide to give up. They give up everything but themselves; everything except what the Lord requires. But, lets not go there. We also learn from the Pharisee that he was not cheapskate. He believed in giving God his monetary due. Most people rob God. They receive from God but only give Him back what may rightfully be called residuals. But again, ritual is not righteousness. What then is righteousness? True righteousness springs from the heart. It is God centered, not self centered. It is recognizing our deficiency in the presence of Gods sufficiency. Righteousness is something that perfects in our lives. It is Christ inside of us carrying out the will of God. The one who in faith gives oneself to the doing of God’s will is righteous, doing righteousness, and considered righteous by God. And the scripture was fulfilled that says, Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness, and he was called God’s friend. James 2:23. Righteousness is that which God requires of man and which He gives as a gift to people of faith. In this line of thought, faith is the condition for the reception of the gift of righteousness from God. God acts in Christ, and, in turn, humans react by having faith.
