The Power of Authentic Marketing … Let YOU Shine Through

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

By Debbie LaChusa One of the things I love most about being a solo-professional is I get to be “me.” Now, I do realize that my business is NOT me … my business coach has made sure of that. And, I do know that’s a good thing. However, one of the things I’ve realized over the past year is how important it is to just be me. To let my personality come through in my articles, my writing and my marketing. It’s funny actually, because I get more reaction from my ezine subscribers when I do this. More than when I pose a marketing question or ask for feedback or response to an article. If I talk about something personal, people connect and they write to me. I was taught this by one of my mentors, Alexandria Brown, The Ezine Queen. She related a story of how when she talked about her kitten, she got all kinds of emails from readers sharing information about their pets. So I figured I’d try it. I literally tried the same thing in one issue of my 10stepmarketing Ezine and talked about my dogs. They are after all my “co-workers” since I work out of my home and no one else is around all day. What happened? Same thing that happened to the Ezine Queen … I got emails back from readers about their pets. The nice thing was, it actually helped me to connect with more of my readers, too, which was cool. The same thing happened when I shared about my new car and my kids. And I started to realize I didn’t have to separate me from my work. And that by bringing more of me into it, I was actually connecting with more of my readers. What a relief that was for me. I could just be me and I could share more than just marketing tips; I could share about me. And that actually works better than just being the “marketing expert” all the time. The other lesson I learned was to let my passion shine through. I am one of those people who feels truly blessed to be doing work I love. I love to get up everyday and help my clients with their marketing. I love sharing what I know in the hope it will help another solo-professional be more successful. And when I hear that I’ve made a difference in someone’s business and their life, I’m overjoyed. So, when I learned to let this passion shine through, to truly market from the heart, it made a huge difference. Not only did marketing become easier, suddenly I didn’t feel like I was “selling,” and I started getting better results. People buy from those they know, like and trust. So I guess it stands to reason that if you’re authentic, you’ll attract people who connect with you and they’ll be more likely to like and trust you. So while I absolutely believe you need to be professional in your marketing, I also believe it’s more important to let your passion and personality shine through than to try and impress people with all your knowledge, experience and credentials. Avoid the big words.Just talk to people in plain English about the problems they’re facing and how you can help them. When they sense you’re speaking to them authentically, odds are they’ll be more likely to want to do business with you. And besides, its more fun to work with people you like! Give it a shot. Just be yourself. You might just be surprised at what happens to your business! Love the Skin You’re In

Monday, May 26th, 2008

By Kim Beardsmore Your skin is the body’s largest organ. It weighs between two and four kilos (or 4 and 8 pounds), covers between one and two square metres (9 to 36 square feet) and completely renews itself every seven to ten weeks, with approximately five million dead skin cells rubbing off on a daily basis. Your skin reflects your state of health and your biological age, being soft and smooth when well-cared for, or dry and flaky when taken for granted. To be the proud owner of beautiful, soft, young-looking skin, you need to take care of it. When taking care of your skin, it’s vital that you take care of the part of you that everybody sees - your face and neck. The absolute golden rule, before you start using products on the delicate skin of your face, is to determine your skin type… Normal and combination skin Slight oily sheen in the T-zone area Drier cheek area Occasional pimples and spots Dry and sensitive skin Fine, dry lines around the eyes and mouth, dehydration lines on fact Cheek area is dull, dry and taut Skin that’s very sensitive to sun, wind and pollution Oily skin Oil sheen in T-zone area and on cheeks Enlarged pores and blackheads evident Frequent pimples and spots So, how can you help keep your skin looking and feeling young? Make sure you do the following: 1. Have a daily intake of two litres of water, including 2-3 glasses with high quality aloe extract 2. Enjoy a diet rich in fresh fruit and vegetables 3. Try to have sound, restful sleep 4. Practice a daily skin care regime using high quality products that suit your skin type 5. Take a high quality supplementation programme, including a vitamin & mineral supplement 6. Take a brisk walk in the fresh air every day 7. Keep stress levels to a minimum and have a happy attitude to life in general The following daily practices will have a detrimental long term effect on the skin: 1. Inadequate daily water intake 2. Poor nutrition, junk food 3. Lack of sleep 4. Stress 5. Prescribed drugs 6. Excess coffee and tea 7. Alcohol consumption 8. Smoking 9. Excess exposure to sunlight, or cold, wet, windy weather 10.Central heating and air conditioning Kim Beardsmore M.B.A. (H.R.M.), B.Sc. The Low Carb Craze and Other Dieting Mistakes

Sunday, May 18th, 2008

By Bill Belfert Dear BMTers, Low carb this and low carb thatthats all you hear nowadays. Kinda reminds me of something that was the craze a few years agoThe Low or No Fat CrazeCan you remember where that got us? Still Fat!!! Well my friends this Low Carb Craze is going to bring us to the same exact placeYepStill Fat! Listen, anyone who tries Low carb dieting will experience some Short Term successbut its only short term. I know some of you are tired of hearing me repeat myself but any diet or exercise machine in and of itself will not work! A successful Fitness Program must incorporate 5 Strategies: 1. A Compelling Reason to Change 2. Proper Nutrition 3. Progressive Resistance Training 4. Moderate Aerobic Exercise 5. Consistency If youre missing any one of these strategies you will not experience the success that you crave. Why the Low Carb diets without Progressive Resistance Training will not work in the long run. We need to build lean muscle on our bodies. Why do we need to build lean muscle on our bodies? Building lean muscle will boost metabolism and that is what we want to achieve. Youll even start burning more calories even while you rest. Right now Im going to let you in on one of the biggest secrets on burning fat ever revealed: Lean Muscle Burns Fat! And, the more lean muscle you have, the more fat you will burn. That is a statement that you can take to the bank! I guarantee it! Listen, all these people that go on these Fad diets are really losing water and lean muscle weight. They Are Not Losing Any Fat Whatsoever! How can they be if I just got finished telling you that in order for us to lose any fat,(and I did mean any fat!) you must have lean muscle tissue for the fat to go be burned up in? Our bodies are smart; our fat just cant go away it must be burned up in a muscle cell. And if youre not doing any Progressive Weight Resistance Training, well then, youre not building any new lean muscle tissue. Which means, you guessed ityou wont be burning fat any time soon!!! Dont you see? The people that go on these Fad (starvation) diets turn into skinny fat people. Sure they lose weight, but they lose the wrong kind of weight. Since these people usually dont perform any weight resistance training and are only probably taking diet pills, and doing hours of aerobic exercise, they are losing water (from the low calorie, low carb diet) and lean muscle (from doing to much aerobic exercise and not having the right amount and the proper ratios of food in their bodies). So what is left? FAT!!! They have no muscle tone whatsoever! What these people should be doing is learning how to lift weights and get stronger progressively! The only way to do that is Get A Little Stronger Each And Every Workout If youre not getting stronger each and every workout than you are doing something wrong! Then all you have to do is add: A Compelling Reason to Change, Proper Nutrition, Moderate Aerobic Exercise, and Consistency to be Successful A great example of dieting the wrong way in my opinion is Anna Nicole Smiths recent weight loss. From a distance she looks great! But get closer and clear the smoke and you will find that she transformed herself into what I explained before a skinny fat person. Did you hear her interviewed lately on shows like Larry King Live and Regis and Kelly? She says she takes Trim Spas Ephedra Free Diet Pills. And she eats like only once per day if shes lucky. And I would bet my life, kids, wife, and the house that she never ever does a workout with weights on a consistent basis!!! So lets see what happened Most people think that to lose excess body fat, they must stop eating altogether. This is where they are totally wrong. Starvation(what else would you call not eating?) triggers a metabolic response where, your metabolism will actually slow down and become more efficient in order to preserve body tissue in the case of a shortage of future nutrition. This is precisely what we dont want. Another way people think theyre eating right is having fruit & coffee for breakfast, a salad for lunch, and a bowl of pasta for dinner. Nope, thats not the answer either. Some people dont eat anything the whole day and save themselves for a big huge dinner! Thats not the answer either. To find the answer, you have to think back to caveman days. Back then, there were no supermarkets or convenience stores to easily get whatever you want and whenever you want it. The caveman didnt know when his next meal was coming. He only ate when he made the big kill and would literally gorge and overstuff himself until he couldnt move! Why? Because he knew that he might not eat again for days or even worseweeks. What this did was make our bodies very bad at processing our food. Since our bodies didnt know when we were going to eat next, they were forced to revert into something known as Survival Mode Whenever you eat, your digestive system converts most of your food(especially large amounts of carbohydrates) to glucose (blood sugar). Its a very complicated process but Ill do my best to sum it up in a nutshell Anytime we eat while were in survival mode, because of the molasses-pace the metabolism is at, the body converts most of the glucosein conjunction with the hormone insulinto fat. This is why people who constantly starve themselves can gain weight while eating only once a day! Wed like to speed up our metabolism, but unfortunately over thousands and thousands of years our bodies havent changed much from the days of the cave man. Every time we eat, our bodies are already automatically going to convert it to fateven if its fat free! Wheres the justice??? So how do we change our body from fat storer to fat burner? We have to learn to use proper nutrition. So the question iswhat is proper nutrition? OK in a nutshell, my idea of proper nutrition is 4 to 5 portion-controlled, balanced meals about every 3 hours throughout the day. By eating this way throughout the day, youll effortlessly speed up your metabolism. Think of it this way. If you have a campfire burning and you dont add wood to the fire, eventually the campfire will burn out. But if you add a little wood every few hours, the campfire will continue to burn, and burn nice and hot! So you see, the human metabolism is like the firenever or rarely feed it, and it will slow down. Feed it every few hours and it has no choice but to speed up. What Is A Portion-Controlled Meal You Ask? A portion-controlled meal is sensible portion of a lean protein, a sensible portion of a starchy carbohydrate, and a sensible portion of a fibrous carbohydrate. Lean protein foods: - Skinless chicken breast - Skinless turkey breast - Tuna fish - Most fish in general - Egg whites - Protein powder Starchy carbohydrates: - Sweet potato - Potato - Rice - Pasta - Oatmeal - Whole grain wheat bread Fibrous Carbohydrates: - Corn - Broccoli - Cauliflower - Asparagus - Peppers Here are a few examples of a portion-controlled meal: Chicken breast with corn & rice Lean steak with potato & broccoli Fish with rice & salad Chicken pita sandwich Egg white omelet with mushrooms & oatmeal or farina A “typical” day of eating on Bare Minimum Training might be : 7:00am: egg white omelet and oatmeal 10:00am: yogurt with cottage cheese 1:00 pm: tuna pita sandwich 4:00 pm: mushroom turkey burger on a whole grain bun 7:00 pm: Salmon with rice 8 8-ounce glasses of spring water (throughout entire day) So you see if Anna Nicole Smith does not start to implement Proper Nutrition and a sound fitness program like Bare Minimum Training Shes setting yourself up for Failuresure she has short term success but eventually shell gain all the weight back!!! I hope she doesnt gain the weight backbut she must change her ways if theres any hope for long term success. Take care, Bill Belfert Copyright 2004 - 2005. When Being a Teen Hurts - And What You Can Do About It

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

By Martyn A. Dell Do you ever look in the mirror and hate what you see? Are your classmates teasing you about the way you look? Are boys ignoring you? Or worse yet, harassing you? Do you feel that no one understands you? Do they think it’s a phase that you’ll grow out of? Can you talk to your parents about what is bugging you? It’s hard being a teenager these days. There is so much pressure coming at you from all sides. Your parents want you to get good grades. Your friends want you to have fun. You may have a job that takes up a lot of your time. Your teachers are loading you down with massive amounts of homework. You’re worried about your future. All the while there are these images of beautiful, young, thin people in movies, on TV, in magazines, in music videos. They appear to have it all. They’re pretty, popular, and happy. You feel that you can never measure up. You can’t be perfect. You are not happy. You want something to change but you don’t know what. You may think that if you dieted to become thinner that you would be happier. You may think that if you were thinner that you would be more popular. You might think that if you changed your outside that you would feel better on the inside. To tell you truthfully, that’s probably not going to happen. If you were thinner you would still have the same issues because you would not be changing your core. If you don’t like who you are on the inside, dressing up your outside will only make you feel better for a little while. It’s inevitable that the same old issues will re-surface and require yet another Band Aid. You can fool some of the people, some of the time but you can never fool yourself for very long. You cannot continually be buying new “wrapping paper.” What do I mean about your core? Your core is what makes you special. It is your inner qualities that shine with brilliance. Your core is made up of your beliefs, attitudes, habits and patterns. In your core you are perfect. You are great! You might be asking right now what I mean about changing your core. What I mean is this - when we change our insides our outsides change to reflect what is going on inside. For example, let’s say that you don’t feel good about the way your body looks. When you change the way that you feel about your body you buy some new clothes because you feel you deserve them. With these new clothes you begin to feel more confident and outgoing. You’re meeting new people and having lots more fun. You have a large group of friends now and you have a wonderful boyfriend. The changes that you have experienced did not start with buying the new clothes, the changes started with you beginning to feel better about yourself. It is your inner core that changed not your “wrapping paper.” You might be asking now how can I change my inner core. That is where a coach can help you. What a coach does is provide a safe space for you to share your experiences, hopes, dreams, feelings, fears, and worries. A coach is non-judgmental and totally confidential. You can feel safe that what you say to your coach will not be repeated to anyone, including your parents. A coach will listen to you deeply and attentively. A coach focuses only on you. A coach will help you decide what your goals are based on what is important to you. After you decide what your goals are, a coach will help you set up an action plan filled with the steps you want to take to achieve your goals. A coach will also help you define what your goals are if they are unclear to you. Sometimes we just have a feeling that something isn’t right but we don’t know what it is. A coach will help you untangle your feelings, like you are loosening a tight knot in a rope, until you have a clear vision of what you want. You have everything already inside yourself to achieve all of your goals. A coach just helps you reach those goals faster. Coaches have a toolkit filled with fun ideas, exercises, and resources that will make achieving your dreams fun, enjoyable, and motivating. Change can be scary sometimes but it can also be exhilarating and joyful. A coach will help to ease your worries and fears about the changes you are experiencing. A coach will be with you every step of the way as you reach for your goals. One important thing I want to stress is that a coach will not do the work for you. It is your responsibility to do the work for your goals on your own. They are YOUR goals, not the coach’s goals. A coach will be there to help you with your goals but will not poke and prod you to achieve them. A coach will celebrate your successes with you. A coach will also help you fine tune your goals if necessary. A coach helps you see that you are perfect just as you are. A coach will see the greatness in you - those wonderful qualities in you that make you so special and unique like no other person on this earth. A coach will help you discover or recognize this greatness for yourself. It’s already there waiting for you to see it. A coach will also show you how to see that greatness in others which will make all of your relationships stronger and better. Let me tell you what a coach is not. A coach is not a therapist. Therapy is more concerned with looking at the past and figuring out how it affects right now. Coaching takes you from where you are right now and looks forward. I urge you to please consider hiring a coach. Coaching can truly change your life for the better. The inner changes that you make to your attitudes, beliefs, habits, and patterns will stay with you for the rest of your life. Let’s face it, don’t you deserve to be happy? I think you do! Martyn A. Dell is the founder of Joyful Changes Coaching, a coaching practice that specializes in coaching teen girls. Martyn remembers being a teenager and realizes now that coaching would have shaved 20 years off her journey to self acceptance. Four Gardening Mistakes to Avoid

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

By Kathy Swann Save yourself time and frustration by avoiding these mistakes and your vegetable garden will be a success season after season. 1. Dont plant in too small of a space- make sure the area you are using is large enough for all your vegetable plants. For years, I kept making the mistake of buying too many plants for too small a space. Or, there would be more plants in the pack than I could use, but I was determined not to throw anything away. One year the cucumbers overtook the tomatoes and caused them to die. Another year I planted watermelons that wrapped themselves around the other plants until they choked the life out of them. 2. Dont plant more than you can care for. Unless you have a lot of time every day to work on your garden, limit your choices to two or three vegetables you want to work with and what youll look forward to eating freshly picked from your garden.Theres nothing like a home grown tomato sliced up with mayo between two pieces of toast. I plant at least two varieties of tomatoes so they wont all be ready at the same time and I can enjoy them for months. 3. Dont plant where the light is bad- make sure your garden is in full sun at least six hours of the day. As the trees in your yard grow every year, the shade they provide changes as well, and eventually they might block the sun your plants so desperately need. One year I planted too close to my wooden fence, and didnt realize that this spot got sun for only an hour every day. My plants never grew well and I wound up having a disappointing growing season that year. 4. Dont forget your garden- plant your vegetables where you can see them from your kitchen or deck. Not only will this remind you to water on those days it doesnt rain, but you can see the results of your labor every day. Youll notice how tall the plants are getting; see that first vegetable thats ready for picking, and youll feel a sense of accomplishment as your garden changes from week to week. Plus when you have company over, they can see the fruits of your labor for themselves! Foraging In The Forest: Finding Materials That Link Your Home To The Great Outdoors

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

By Amy Snyder Thinking about redecorating? Before you run to the nearest interior design store, consider looking to the forests instead. Natural, minimally-worked materials help create an interior that seamlessly transitions from the outdoors a relaxing environment thats a pleasure to come home to. Ideas include: Instead of a formal curtain rod, use a smooth piece of wood and hang natural linen curtains. Here in the Southwest, manzanita is a popular choice for its red bark and sculptural growth patterns. You can also carve and shape sturdy branches into stair case railings. Dont forget furniture. Some furniture makers specialize in furniture that leaves the initial tree forms intact. Here in Prescott, Arizona, Steve Rouette, owner of the boutique furniture company Out On A Limb, finds standing dead alligator junipers and turns them into furniture that leaves the woods gray wany edge exposed. His armoires feature copper sides that have been pressed with branches, further connecting the interior of the house with the natural world outside. Another way to connect your homes interior with natural processes is to choose furnishings and accessories which change over time. This concept, known as Wabi Sabi in Japan, emphasizes the asymmetric, imperfect and transitory nature of life. In practical terms, it encourages the use of natural materials like rice paper and bamboo screens, whose colors deepen in response to the passage of time. Other materials to consider include rusted metal, rattan and wicker. As you incorporate natural materials, dont forget the world just outside your windows. What works in the Southwest will fail utterly in the Northwest because the color palettes are so different in the two regions. Using wood from your own property is one way to ensure that the colors will work as is matching and coordinating outdoor hues with your homes fabrics, flooring and countertops. The final result is like a breath of fresh air blowing in from the countryside. It will not only be a more open and inviting space, but one that may heal and renew as well. Amy Snyder is the interior designer at Sun Pine Homes, a custom home builder and developer in Prescott, Arizona. Sun Pines current project is developing Granite Park, a residential community first founded in 1905 and filled with 1.4 billion-year old boulders.
